All state hunting laws and implementing regulations specify shooting and closed seasons for the individual game species for their federal state. Wild animals are only those animal species that are mentioned in the state hunting laws and in the shooting and closed season regulations. Some animal species are “wild” in one federal state, in another state they are not “wild” for purely legal reasons - such as the golden jackal, the beaver rat, the elk.

Individual district administrative authorities can also change (extend or shorten) shooting times and closed seasons for districts according to regional circumstances and needs.

Certain animal species are subject to shooting planning in Austria. It is only permissible to shoot such wild animals with official authorization or an order. As part of the planning of the shootings, the approved or ordered shootings are actually to be carried out.

There are plans to shoot all hoofed game species (except wild boar) and grouse. In some federal states, the marmot is also subject to a shooting plan. For each hunting area, a person who is authorized to practice hunting or his hunting supervisor must keep a shooting list.

This list of kills is to be submitted to the authority once a year to review the kills that have been carried out. The launches carried out are also checked as part of an annual show (trophy show). All trophy holders (antler and horn bearers) must be presented by the shooters. The kills are rated by gender and age group and compared to the killing plans.
